High Level Dressage Competitor Dies From Horse Fall

A high level dressage rider in New Zealand, Nicola Pellett,  suffered a serious head injury when her horse reared and she fell off.  She lost consciousness when her head hit the ground.  Her riding partner, a nurse, did CPR until she was flown by helicopter to the hospital.  She never regained consciousness and was in a coma until she died 5 days later.

Nicki Berg, her sister-in-law, said “Horse riding was central to her life, she competed in dressage to a highly competitive level, she was doing really well with that.”

It is not known if she was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
