A horse tragically dies every 3 days in Australia, a new report publishes. A total of 115 horses were killed due to injuries sustained while racing during 2014. Jumps racing is particularly hard on horses, as 50% of horses that compete never compete the next year. The Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses, which compiled the data, say the actual number is undoubtedly much higher. One horse that died during a race, Black Rebel, is still listed as being active, and it would be nearly impossible to determine how many horses listed as active have already be killed and sent to the knackers.
