Editorial – Every year dozens, if not hundreds, of horses are gored open by bulls and left to die a slow, lingering death at the Torneo de Lazo in the Mexico state of Yukatan. At the Tornoe de Lazo, cowboys on horseback chase a bull around an arena in an attempt to rope him. The bulls are specifically bred and trained to charge horses, and the horses often suffer fatal wounds, usually evisceration.
One bull, El Sinaloense, killed over 100 horses in a one year period in 2007-2008. The cowboys, tired of losing their valuable horses, finally publically strangled El Sinaloense to death to exact their revenge.
The Tornoe de Lazo is considered a family festival, despite the almost always present death and carnage. The bull roping is illegal in Yukatan, but state and local officials refuse to enforce the ban.
To help the international efforts to force law enforcement in the Yukatan to put a stop once and for all to the needless suffering and death of horses, and the torture of the bulls, please sign the petition.
