In a heartwarming tale of courage and ingenuity, an orphaned baby horse was rescued from an island in the middle of the Bighorn river in southeast Montana. A fisherman spotted the baby horse, apparently lost and alone, laying on the ground just whinnying. Help Every Pet of Hardin staff and volunteers gathered on scene to help the approximately 1 month old foal. They crossed the river in a small boat, and were able to corral the baby. A local vet was called to provide assistance. He went to the island, tranqualized the baby, and they were able to load her into the boat and transport her to safety. No sign of her mother was ever found, it is believed the a herd of horses crossed over to the island, were trapped by rising waters, the baby was born, and then her mother left with the herd when the water receded somewhat.
The baby, now named Rio, is doing well and is not expected to have any long term complications to her abandonment.
