In Spain, for the last 400 years, people gather for an annual 4 day festival which includes rounding up hundreds of feral horses, wildly wrestling them to the ground, branding them and cutting their manes and tails. The origins of the event are unknown, and cutting the hair seems to serve no purpose other than identifying the horses. Those concerned with animal welfare have been calling for an end to the Rapas Das Bestas, but those who participate in the event say no animal cruelty occurs and the tradition is perfectly acceptable.
