Just weeks after an intense public outcry forced the US Forest Service to suspend plans to conduct a roundup of the Salt River wild horses, one of the horses was found dead alongside a highway. The horse was a 2 year old the Salt River Wild Horse Management group had named Thunder. “It’s pretty devastating to us, it’s very sad,” said Simone Netherlands, president of the group. The sheriff department could not confirm that the horse was struck by a car, but skid marks were found in the area.
Those involved in keeping the wild horses free are deeply concerned that this accident will lead to the Forest Service determining a roundup is necessary for public safety. As of now, the Forest Service is studying the issue and has made no specific plans for a roundup.
