As originally reported on October 25th, Tom Davis sent over 1,700 Mustangs that he purchased from the BLM to slaughter between 2009 and 2012. The BLM lost over $120,000 selling and transporting the horses to Davis.
The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Inspector General investigated Davis. When asked, he plainly told them “Probably close to all of them” were shipped to slaughter. The department turned the results of their investigation over to the U.S. attorney’s office and the 12th Judicial District, but both agencies have declined to prosecute. The local District Attorney preciously decided not to press charges.
The U.S. governments failure to protect the wild horses under their care in accordance with the law, and their failure to prosecute those who so flagrantly violate the law, have horse advocates outraged. “I think it is dangerous that nothing at all happened. Shouldn’t Tom be an example if people are worried about horses going to slaughter? I think he should be made to pay,” said Ginger Kathrens, executive director of the Cloud Foundation told reporters.
