20 Horses Abandoned to Die by Rescue

South Carolina – In 2015, a rescue moved their horses onto a pasture also leased by Christina Koslow.  Many of the horses arrived in poor condition, but Koslow considered that normal for a rescue that was helping horses.  The owner of the rescue cared well for the horses in her care, and got along great with the other boarders on the pasture.  2016 was the turning point for the rescue.  Koslow wrote “By 2016 the rescue horses had ballooned to almost 30 and the rescue owner couldn’t afford their care… so she simply stopped providing it. Yet more rescue horses kept arriving—it was a full-blown hoarding/neglect situation. Horses died and were dragged into the woods. We were concerned but—I’m ashamed to say—we minded our own business.”

The rescue owner continued to neglect the horses, and the dead horses told a tale of neglect and abuse with horrible teeth, mangled hooves, and emaciation.    The horses that survived had open wounds,  ribs showing through emaciated sides, and were suffering for lack of food and care.  Koslow, and others, called Animal Control.  Responding officers told Koslow that the rescue was not a 501(c)(3), and there was nothing they could do for the horses.  The owner of the rescue showed up one day, loaded as many of the nice horses into a trailer as could fit, and disappeared.  All attempts to reach the rescue owner go unanswered.

The owner of the pasture, who was not being paid for the rescue horses board, contacted the police.  They told him by law the horses were abandoned and now his property and responsibility.  According to Koslow, the owner of the pasture contacted a kill buyer to ship all the horses to slaughter.  She has started a Youcaring fundraiser to raise funds to purchase the horses from the pasture owner.  “The owner is ok with me adopting out horses as long as he gets his money for each—by the pound,” she writes.

We are attempting to find out more information about these abandoned horses and the person responsible.
