The operators of The Haven – Friends For Life animal shelter in Hoke County, North Carolina have been arrested after local law enforcement with assistance from the ASPCA seized 40 horses and over 550 other animals from the no kill shelter. Authorities originally served a search warrant to determine if there was validity to numerous complaints they had received about the animals at the shelter and determined the animals were in fact being neglected. This was the largest animal seizure in the ASPCA’s 150 year history.
“You’ve got animals out here with open wounds, obvious skin conditions. Animals that appear to be malnourished,” Capt. John Kivett with the Hoke County Sheriff’s Office told reporters. Animals were kept in small, dirty kennels and cages, some with no protection from the elements.
The shelter’s 2014 tax form shows donations totaled nearly $300,000 with no compensated employees other than an outside person who ran a bingo game to generate revenue for the shelter.
