Colfax, Wisconsin – In the first event of its kind in Wisconsin, 51 horses were surrendered at a 1-day open door shelter event hosted by Pony Tales Rescue and Horse Plus Humane Society. “I call it ‘pen-city’ because it was just assembled over the weekend,” said Dierdre Golberg, president of Spirit Horse Equine Rescue, which also participated in the event.
“The 1-Day Open Door Shelter is open for free for the surrender for folks who have inability to care for their animals, due to age, harsh winters, etc,” Larry Dowell of Horse Plus Humane Society told reporters. Horse owners were able to surrender their horses free of charge, and dozens of owners took advantage of the opportunity.
Horse Plus Humane Society credits the Watershed Fund with providing the funding for the event, which has also been held in Oklahoma.
