Auburn, Kentucky – The Amish community in western Kentucky has taken the county to court after a city ordinance was passed requiring manure collection bags on all cart horses on public roads. The Logan County court system is getting overwhelmed with the amount of cases piling up about the ordinance, and members of the Amish community have been fined and jailed for refusing to comply.
The Amish have refused to comply with the ordinance, as they say the bags could frighten their horses, and they believe the ordinance unfairly targets their community. “It’s being clearly designed to single out the Amish and, frankly, to discriminate against the Amish,” attorney for the Amish Travis Lock said. “This ordinance was passed to target this particular group of Amish in the Auburn community and that in and of itself is unconstitutional and discriminatory.”
Meetings between city leaders and Amish community leaders have failed to come to an agreement outside of court.
