During the celebrations and parties, it’s important to remember that slaughter is no respecter of horse breeding or history. Less than a year ago, Duke was rescued at the New Holland horse slaughter auction. Duke started life as a well loved horse at the Busch Gardens in Williamsburg. He was sold with a first right of refusal, but his new owners disappeared and his location was unknown until he was rescued at the slaughter auction. No matter how strong a contract is written, if the new owners violate the contract, the horse is always the one to suffer.
