New York City – An animal welfare activist turned physical when he shoved a carriage driver, and it was all caught on video. Ed Sullivan, 48, who identifies himself as a “big Irish man” shoved the much smaller Sal Ruggeri, 55, as he was trying to load customers into a carriage.
Sullivan says he pushed the driver in response to the driver shoving a female animal welfare activist, a claim the driver denies. Sullivan was charged with misdemeanor assault, police say.
“He’s been showing up regularly since like the end of August, telling us we might as well go back to the stables because you’re not going to do any business. [He says] ‘I’ll make sure people won’t get into the carriage.’” Christina Hansen, a horse carriage driver and spokesperson for the industry told reporters.
Reports indicate that after his arrest, Sullivan was back protesting a mere hour later. “I would prefer this kind of violence not happen,” Sullivan said. “My real goal is to talk to their customers and talk them out of taking the carriages.”
