Champion Walking Horse Trainer Found Guilty

A champion Tennesee Walking Horse trainer, Jamie Lawrence, has been found guilty for misdemeanor assault and will be sentenced March 3rd.  The 12 person jury deliberated for an hour before passing the lesser charge.  Lawrence had been facing felony assault with a deadly weapon, but after weighing the evidence the jury convicted him on the lesser charge.

The case came about when Lawrence deliberately drove his truck towards Teressa Pipen, who was protesting soring, on May 30, 2015.

TWH ProtestA protester picketing against soring at a Tennessee Walking Horse show was almost ran over by an angry trainer, witness’ say and video shows.  Teresa Bippen, aged 58, was standing on the grass beside a road when a well known trainer, Jamie Lawrence, allegedly attempted to run her over.  Video shows Lawrence turning his truck wheels towards Bippen and strongly accelerating towards her.  Bippen, according to personal testimony and witness testimony, had to quickly move in order to prevent being run over.

A Maury County Sheriff officer, Lt. Andy Jackson, witnessed the event and pulled Lawrence over.  “I asked him why he did that, and he stated that he should not have” Jackson’ report states.  Two Columbia City Police officers also witnessed the event.

Lawrence was allowed to continue to the show.  A grand jury will determine which charges, if any, to press.  Possible charges include aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, reckless driving and Civil Rights intimidation.
