Assateague Island, Virginia – One of the famous Chincoteague ponies, Tunkan Hoksila or N10OY, was hit and killed by a car.  Tunkan Hoksila was a 16-year-old stallion.  “He is usually found with his mares from Pine Tree south most of the year and occassionally in the developed area in the summer,” the Assateague Island Alliance says on his profile.

Apparently Tunkan Hoksila apparently made the swim successfully to Chincoteague Island, and back to Assateague earlier today.  He was struck by a car at approximately 3:30 pm and due to a broken leg, had to be euthanized.  One witness to the accident said the horse looked like it tried to jump over the car or was launched up and over the car when they collided.

Rangers strongly enforce the speed limit on Assateague Island, but despite the strict enforcement, 30 horses have died due to vehicle collisions since 1982.
