Chincoteague, Virginia – For the 91st time, the Chincoteague ponies swam the ocean in the annual Chincoteague Pony Swim.  Approximately 150 adult and 60-70 foals made the swim from Assateague Island to Chincoteague Island at low tide.   After landing on Chincoteague, the ponies are paraded to the fair grounds where the excess foals are auctioned off.

57 foals were auctioned off this year, including 7 buybacks.  The winning bids were between $550 and $11,000.  The total raised from the auction was a staggering $151,550.  One of the buybacks, which sold for $8,100, benefited the Special Olympics.  “All proceeds from one of the buy backs this year will benefit Special Olympics of Virginia Eastern Shore Area 19,” Public Relations Officer for the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company Roe Terry said.

All the ponies made the swim safely, and those not sold are returning to Assateague Island today.
