‘Concrete Cowboys’ Riding in Philly

Concrete Cowboy

Concrete Cowboy  Malik Divers always knew the connection between horses and humans.  Over 10 years ago, he founded a small stable in south Philadelphia and reached out to the local kids and teens.  Great Big Story recently did a story on Divers’ stable and one 18-year-old in particular, Shahir Drayton.  Shahir first got on a horse when he was 10 years old, and has been hooked ever since.  “The horses really do help with aggression,” Shahir told Great Big Story, “Violence in the community is crazy, I lost a brother, a uncle, I lost a lot of friends.  When I work with the horses it’s a type of therapy…  If I’d never met Malik and started riding horses, I would be doing stuff I wasn’t supposed to be, gettin’ in trouble.”

For the kids who are able to bond with a horse and ride in Philadelphia, it is often literally the difference between life and death.  The horses of Malik’s stable are in a very real way rescuing the kids of Philadelphia.
