Gosport, England – A woman who left a dead horse rotting in a stable with live horses has been sentenced. Claire Hopkins plead guilty to causing unnecessary suffering and failing to meet the needs of her three horses. The court heard testimony that Hopkins left her three horses in a stable, unattended, for at least 2 weeks in April and May of this year. One of the horses, named Phoebe, died during that time and her body was left rotting in the stable with her stablemate Fred. The 3rd horse left locked in the stable was an emaciated, pregnant mare named Molly, and she was close to death. Inspectors with the RSPCA were shocked by what they found. “In my 15 years as an RSPCA inspector this was the worst case I have ever seen. It was horrendous,” inspector Jenny Ride told reporters.
Hopkins was sentenced to 8 weeks in prison, but the sentence was suspended for 12 months. She was ordered to pay £574.80, and ordered to take a 20 day rehabilitation activity. She was also banned from keeping horses for 3 years.
