Burke County, Georgia – When horse rescuer Charlie Chappee visited a home in rural Burke County to offer assistance for some malnourished horses, she had no idea her life would be in danger.
Chappee went to offer to purchase the two horses, but the owner refused and turned violent. “Gun to the head…window kicked in…tried for my face…missed,” is how Chappee described the incident to the media. “He was punching here you can see the dent here. Then he started kicking the car. Once I got in, he started kicking the window and kicked the window in,” she went on to further explain the assault.
Two horses on the property are extremely emaciated. The black is visibly the worst, but the white horse is pregnant which hides her horrible condition. “The white horse is pregnant and that’s the only reason she looked good. If she makes it through the pregnancy, she’s going to look as bad as him,” said Chappee.
Burke County Sheriff Department and the Department of Agriculture investigated the horses. The owner told them the horses had seen a vet the week before, and the vet told him he was feeding too much grain and to feed hay instead. 3 bales of hay were on the property when officials visited. Sheriff officers declined to prosecute the owner for assaulting Chappee, leaving her in fear for her life and the life of her animals.
