In the Spanish town of San Batolome de Pinares, riders rode and jumped their horses through bonfires in a tradition that dates back 100’s of years. The tradition, named Las Luminarias, is held in celebration of St Anthony, patron saint of animals. Ride through the fire is supposed to purify the animal and keep them safe for the coming year. Those concerned with animal welfare decry the event as inhumane to the horses, while those who participate claim it does not injure the horses as their coats are soaked with water before riding through the fire.
