New Mexico Bans Horse Slaughter

Sad Horse

Valley Meat in Roswell, New Mexico had big plans to convert a cattle slaughterhouse into the nations first horse slaughter plant since the remaining plants closed in 2007.  The New Mexico Attorney General filed a lawsuit in 2013 to prevent the opening of the slaughterhouse, citing environmental and food safety laws.

NM State District Judge Matthew Wilson issued a permanent injunction against Valley Meat from ever slaughtering horses.  NM Attorney General Hector Balderas released a statement that said in part “there is no place for horse slaughter in the state of New Mexico.”  As of the ruling by Judge Wilson, horse slaughter is banned in New Mexico unless the law is changed.
