Niger Bans Donkey Exports to China

Donkeys in Niger

Niger, Africa – Niger has become the latest in a series of countries that have banned exports of donkey and donkey parts to China.  Donkeys are valued in China for their gelatin, which is used medicinally for everything from face creams to aphrodisiacs.  The donkey population in the mainland of China has dropped from 11 million to only 6 million, and shrinks by close to half a million every year.  With the dwindling population of native donkeys, the country is seeking imports from around the world.

Livestock dealers in Niger have been going into the donkey business.  Donkeys can sell for up to $145 each when exported.  The government of Niger is worried about their population being unable to afford donkeys, which they use for everything from agriculture to carrying water for their families.
