Opening day July 15, 2016 – Del Mar Racetrack

Del Mar, California – Opening day at Del Mar Racetrack was met with fanfare and over 42,000 fans waiting to see their favorite horses run.   Among those racing, Presidential Air was making her 9th career start in a $20,000 filly and mare claiming race.  She broke down and collapsed on the home stretch, throwing her jockey.  Jockey Brandon Boulanger was uninjured, but Presidential Air had to be euthanized on the track.

Presidential Air’s death sparked back to back protests on Saturday and Sunday outside of the park.  “This weekend starts the summer season of abusing and killing horses for profit and entertainment. It is beyond me to even think that in the year 2016 this is even legal,” said Ellen Ericksen, the protest organizer.

Del Mar’s opening day brought the 10th largest crowd ever for opening day to Del Mar.  42,562 fans attended the races Friday, but were betting a lot less than last year.  “I thought there would be a bump (moving from a Thursday opening to a Friday),” said Del Mar president and chief executive officer Joe Harper. “Fridays are just usually better than Thursdays. I’m really happy with the numbers. Anything that’s up is good. It’s a great crowd. It’s young, it’s happy, it’s scantily attired.”
