North Dakota – The protest against the multi-billion dollar, multi-state oil pipeline turned violent Saturday with multiple reports of injuries to protesters and security. The protest is considered the largest gather of Native American’s in 100 years, with thousands of individuals coming from around the country. The protesters are voicing their concern over the construction of the pipeline, which will carry approximately 570,000 barrels of oil from North Dakota to Illinois once constructed. They believe the pipeline will eventually leak and destroy the ground water.
When protesters broke through the fence to chase the construction crews away, they were met by private security with mace and guard dogs. Several of the protesters were on horseback, and one dramatic clip in a Democracy Now video shows a loose security dog attacking a horse and rider. The horse and rider try to escape, but the dog repeatedly lunges at them. The security dog then attacked another horse and rider.
Both horses appeared to be OK from the video, and no visible blood or injuries were seen.
