Hayward County, North Carolina – Police have arrested two people for stealing two horses. 33-year-old Dustin Heath Hoglen and Nancy McClellan, 55, are both charged with two counts of felony larceny of a horse. They turned themselves in to police.
Hoglen and McClellan stole two horses, Bella and Romeo, from the Russ and Patricia Parker early Saturday morning. They took Bella to a Knoxville, TN horse auction. Most of the horses sold at that auction are shipped to Canada or Mexico for slaughter. Romeo was sold to a father and 8-year-old son. When the son found out the pony was stolen, he said “I love this horse, but I know he’s yours.”
The Parker’s contacted law enforcement, put the word out on social media and filed a report with NetPosse. Thousands of people joined in the search for Bella and Romeo. An alert person at the Knoxville auction posted photos of what they believed was Bella showing her auction tag, and the Parker’s confirmed it. The auction tag led investigators to the horse and the thieves. “If we hadn’t have had that tag on this horse — a friend of ours looking through pictures — if we hadn’t have had that tag with this horse, these horses would have been lost forever,” Russ Parker told the media. “If those people had not taken those pictures, these horses would have been gone forever, and Bella very likely would have ended up in a slaughterhouse in Mexico.”
