Houston, TX – Shere Dore was booked into jail after District Judge Jim Wallace raised her bail from $2,000 to $5,000. Dore is accused of punching a police horse during an anti-Trump protest, and is facing 10 years in jail for a third degree felony interference with a police animal if convicted.
Dore was marching towards city hall with hundreds of other protesters when they were confronted by mounted police. The protesters were marching on city streets, in violation of city code, and the officers used their horses to push them back onto the sidewalk. When a horse, named Astro, got close to Dore, she allegedly took a fighting stance and punched Astro in the shoulder.
“I want the world to know that our clients are absolutely innocent. They have a First Amendment right to protest,” attorney Jolanda Jones, who is representing a co-defendant for hiding a body camera that fell from an officer, told reporters. “I think this is one of the first indications of what’s going to happen with the new president.” She went on to say “No one hit a horse.”
Biran Harrison, who is representing Dore, has another theory explaining why his client was arrested. “These cases were filed to try and intimidate protesters against Donald Trump. And we are going to fight these charges that are aimed at discouraging people from exercising their first amendment rights.”
