Weatherford, Texas – The Arnold Reproduction Center is well-known for producing top quality cutting horses.  Located in the heart of cattle country in Texas, their services include embryo transfers, semen collection, cooling, artificial insemination and mare care.  Owned by veterinarian Dr Leea Arnold, the staff includes 3 other veterinarians and a host of grounds workers.

Over 20 mares were recently dumped at a slaughter auction by the Arnold Reproduction Center, all bearing the distinctive “LA” brand.  Dr Arnold refused to talk to media, but their Facebook page did confirm they sent used up mares to auction. “I recently sent some mares to the Cleburne Horse Sale. I certainly never intended for them to end up in the slaughter pen. Many of these mares came to me through the sale barn system, were sick, completely unbroken and certainly destined for slaughter at that time (15 or so years ago). As long as these mares are reproductively sound, they stay in my herd – many probably longer than they are useful. My staff and I have taken the time, money, and resources we have to help these mares become useful and give them a viable purpose.”

The number of host mares owned by Arnold is unknown at this time, but in a 2013 interview, Dr Arnold stated she had 650 mares.

Horse rescue organizations were only able to save a few of the mares sent to auction, and the rest were shipped to slaughter.  With 4 veterinarians on staff, horse welfare advocates wonder why the Arnold Reproduction Center cannot at the minimum give their used up broodmares a humane death through euthanasia.
