New Zealand – A 31-year-old woman, Te Ara Smiler, was sentenced for starving her horse to death. Smiler locked her horse, Rangi, in a small pen without any pasture and apparently never fed him. When the SPCA was called to the property, Rangi was extremely emaciated and had elevated heart rate and respirations. The attended vet recommended euthanasia. Investigators found the charred remains of another horse, Pappa, that had gone down the day before, been shot, and his body burnt.
Smiler was sentenced to 120 hours of community service, nearly $500 fine for vet costs, and banned from owning horses for 5 years. She plans on appealing her sentence, claiming that the ban is an undue hardship on her. “Her hope is that she can study, so she is able to care for animals at some point in the future,” Smiler’s lawyer told reporters.Author: Dale Williams <-- Become my friend on Facebook! - Phone: 724-964-6773
