Methuen, Massachusetts – 10 Percheron draft horses were recently surrendered to the Massachusetts SPCA. MSPCA Law Enforcement Officer Christine Allenberg had worked with the owner for months, doing what she could to enforce the proper care and feeding of the herd.
The elderly owner finally decided he no longer had the ability or resources to care for the 10 large horses, and surrendered his entire herd to the MSPCA. “Some of them are underweight and some have teeth and hoof issues, but at the end of the day, the owner did the right thing, which was to accept that he could no longer meet their needs and to surrender them to our care,” Officer Allenberg said in a prepared statement.
The horses, 9 geldings and 1 mare, range in age from 7 to 28 years old. Barn manager Gia Barss shared the condition of the horses with reporters. “We see some ribs and spines showing on some of the horses, so getting everyone to a healthy weight and comfortably settling them is the priority at this early stage. We’ll also need to address some other concerns such as overgrown hooves and dental issues.”
