Bloomsbury, New Jersey – The SPCA has seized 37 horses from Horse’s for Hope, a so-called therapy program, after 5 horses had to be euthanized for botulism. The director of Horse’s for Hope, Aiyanna Callaway, 33, would feed feed the horses hay shrink wrapped with plastic, without cutting the plastic. “She probably didn’t know botulism was in the hay. But it’s common knowledge not to feed horses round barrels of hay in plastic,” neighbor Panikkar told reporters. The horses would have to chew through the plastic to get to the hay.
13 of the 37 horses seized were emaciated, and Callaway is being charged with 15 counts of animal cruelty. When authorities first visited the property in March, the horses had only plastic wrapped hay to eat, and the water troughs were frozen solid. The only access to water was a pond, which collected fecal and urine runoff.
Callaway reportedly told people to lie to authorities about her therapy program, to avoid getting the required New Jersey horse dealer license.Author: Dale Williams <-- Become my friend on Facebook! - Phone: 724-964-6773
