Wyalusing, PA – The Wyalusing Valley Junior-Senior High School’s annual donkey basketball fundraiser is raising the ire of locals, with allegations of abuse leveled against the school and participants. Donkey basketball, where anyone who pays a little extra can ride a donkey and play basketball, is organized by professional companies who split the proceeds with the hosting school.
The donkeys used for donkey basketball, often untrained to ride, are forced to carry people far to heavy for their backs. A typical donkey can carry 20% of its body weight if properly balanced and secured, which comes to 100 lbs. Most participants of donkey basketball weigh far more than 100 lbs.
The flooring of school gyms is typically smooth and slick, which makes donkey’s slip and fall regularly, which adds to the amusement of the crowd.
