Auckland, New Zealand – Voice’s owners watched helplessly as the 20-year-old Thoroughbred mare was swept away by raging flood waters.  Torrential rains had flooded the area, sending Voice and her stablemate Lottie downriver.  Lottie was rescued in chest deep water hours later, but Voice was nowhere to be seen.

2 weeks after being swept downstream, Voice appeared mere feet from where she was last seen.  She was covered in mud and dirt, and was showing signs of starving.  “Where she came from, I have no idea, because we’ve scoured every part of that river over and over again,” Liz Currie, who cares for Voice and Lottie, told reporters.

Currie went on to describe the mare’s condition.  “She’s obviously been stuck on a bank somewhere because she was a real mess.  I’ve given her a bath to try and get some of the mud and that off her, but it’s all river sand.  She’s been stuck quite deep because it’s all up under her belly, through her tail.”

Currie, and Voice’s owner Crystal Hall, are both ecstatic that the mare managed to survive and find her way home.
