Pitt County, North Carolina – Sheriff Deputies can come in all shapes and sizes, but the newest members of the Pitt County Sheriff Department are purposefully miniature. Two miniature horses were sworn in as deputies at a ceremony in the Pitt County Courthouse on Thursday. The minis, named Gunner and Sammy, are now official deputies with the Pitt County Sheriff.
The minis will be working as therapy horses to help victims of crimes, in partnership with Rocking Horse Ranch and the University of North Carolina. The program is a new addition to the Sheriff department, but Sheriff Neil Elks is excited. “The reaction I saw on people’s face, I said, ‘Man, this is real. This is going to work,'” Elks told reporters.
The Sheriff Department is also hoping the miniature horses can promote positive interaction between the department and the community. The minis are available to any agency in eastern North Carolina.
