Mule Survives 7 Winter Months in Oregon Wilderness

Last November, while packing out of appropriately named Hell’s Canyon, a mule named Doug ran off from the string.  An intensive search was made for Doug by his owners, hunters, and even pilots from the air, but Doug evaded capture.  With the worst winter in 50 years bearing down upon them, Doug’s owner feared the worst.

7 months later Doug was spotted by hunters, alive but skinny.  Two weeks after he was seen again for the first time, Doug was captured by Collin.  “Collin is a mountain man of sorts, who apparently lives in the wilderness with his mules, and whatever he can pack. A salt block and a bag of potatoes in trade, and Doug was returned to us,” owner Carly Rich wrote on her Facebook post.

Doug, now renamed Captain Bonneville, is expected to recover without complication and return to work shortly.
