Penngrove, California – As reported on April 16, Juanita Carrillo, owner of Paws Fur Beauty, was awakened by a loud crashing sound coming from her miniature horse pen Saturday morning at 2:00 am. Her mini pen was destroyed, and both of her miniature horses were laying dead. The driver responsible for killing her minis, Big Red and Scout, has been found, and he is facing criminal charges.
Ronald O. Rennert Jr., 39, is facing a maximum of 1 year in jail for his drunken killing spree through the mini’s pen. Or, alternatively, he could simply receive probation. He is being charged with 1 count of suspected drunken driving and 2 counts of hit and run with destruction of property.
Carrillo is livid that he is facing such a light sentence. Under California law, without an intent to torture or maliciously injure an animal, Rennert cannot be charged with animal cruelty. “If it was animal cruelty, you have to have the required mental state. You have to intend to do something,” Sonoma County District Attorney Jill Ravitch told reporters.
Rennert does not even remember leaving the bar, getting into his car, driving through the mini pen, being pulled over or arrested that night he claims.Author: Dale Williams <-- Become my friend on Facebook! - Phone: 724-964-6773
