Ascension Parish, Louisiana – Miraj, a 7-year-old stallion, was found living in absolute filth, emaciated, so close to death everyone who saw him was surprised he is still alive. His owner, Kenneth D. Corley, 32, was arrested for animal cruelty.
Humane Society of Louisiana was contacted by Animal Control at 10:00 pm requesting assistance. The HSL Shelter Manager, Jessica Cameron, took the call and made arrangements to meet at the scene. When she arrived, Dr Anna Norwood (DVM) was already evaluating Miraj. Dr Norwood gave Miraj IV fluids and the decision was made to transport him to an equine hospital.
Sheriff Sgt Steven Thrash provided an escort for the slow-moving trailer to the hospital. The next morning Miraj was still standing, eating hay, and drinking. The attending veterinarians are hopeful he will make a full recovery.
