Pitkin, Louisiana – The Thompson’s Horse Lot and Co, also known as Double S Kill Pen and Auction Horses, recently posted a photo of a horse at their feedlot. The horse, identified as a Thoroughbred, had its upper lip severely burned and mutilated.
The seller of the horse allegedly burned and mutilated the upper lip to remove the tattoo that all Thoroughbreds are given before racing. Mutilating a lip tattoo is a common method of hiding the owner’s identity of horses shipped to slaughter.
Maggie Moss shared the photo to her Facebook wall hoping to raise awareness and launch an investigation into the abuse. “Here is one of the many thoroughbreds at Thompson’s lot in La- This is the sick demented mentality of ‘those that are actually licensed at La racetracks.’ To burn off a tattoo – PLEASE help stop this archaic madness in La racing environment – Demand a national investigation – senators, law enforcement, humane society, IRS ( these people pay no taxes – sales or otherwise). I have tried every avenue I know and feel totally powerless and tormented,” she wrote.
